Climate Change - Earth Wobbles!

As most of my friends know, I do believe the climate is changing but I have never believed it was due to CO2 emissions. I still think I'm right and it seems that Oregon University research supports me in this.
The CO2 theory is convenient for politicians because it enables them to part you from your cash. Earth wobble theories tend to leave the money where it rightfully belongs - in your own pocket!. The following 2 articles are from a couple of news sites. I couldn't get the link to work again for the first one and regrettable I lost the link to the 2nd one also because the beloved browser, Internet Explorer refused to cooperate with writing the blog and I had to change to Firefox. It's current news so I'm sure you'll find any number of sites carrying the facts. Oregon University published the paper.

.
Want to bet that politicians and those who stand to make money out of this refuse to accept it and will keep repeating the mantra that it's all caused by man and carbon credits will fix it all?

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A team of researchers says it has largely put to rest a long debate on the underlying mechanism that has caused periodic ice ages on Earth for the past 2.5 million years – they are ultimately linked to slight shifts in solar radiation caused by predictable changes in Earth’s rotation and axis.

In a publication to be released Friday in the journal Science, researchers from Oregon State University and other institutions conclude that the known wobbles in Earth’s rotation caused global ice levels to reach their peak about 26,000 years ago, stabilize for 7,000 years and then begin melting 19,000 years ago, eventually bringing to an end the last ice age.

The melting was first caused by more solar radiation, not changes in carbon dioxide levels or ocean temperatures, as some scientists have suggested in recent years.

“Solar radiation was the trigger that started the ice melting, that’s now pretty certain,” said Peter Clark, a professor of geosciences at OSU. “There were also changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels and ocean circulation, but those happened later and amplified a process that had already begun.”

The findings are important, the scientists said, because they will give researchers a more precise understanding of how ice sheets melt in response to radiative forcing mechanisms. And even though the changes that occurred 19,000 years ago were due to increased solar radiation, that amount of heating can be translated into what is expected from current increases in greenhouse gas levels, and help scientists more accurately project how Earth’s existing ice sheets will react in the future.

“We now know with much more certainty how ancient ice sheets responded to solar radiation, and that will be very useful in better understanding what the future holds,” Clark said. “It’s good to get this pinned down.”

The researchers used an analysis of 6,000 dates and locations of ice sheets to define, with a high level of accuracy, when they started to melt. In doing this, they confirmed a theory that was first developed more than 50 years ago that pointed to small but definable changes in Earth’s rotation as the trigger for ice ages.

“We can calculate changes in the Earth’s axis and rotation that go back 50 million years,” Clark said. “These are caused primarily by the gravitational influences of the larger planets, such as Jupiter and Saturn, which pull and tug on the Earth in slightly different ways over periods of thousands of years.”

That, in turn, can change the Earth’s axis – the way it tilts towards the sun – about two degrees over long periods of time, which changes the way sunlight strikes the planet. And those small shifts in solar radiation were all it took to cause multiple ice ages during about the past 2.5 million years on Earth, which reach their extremes every 100,000 years or so.

Sometime around now, scientists say, the Earth should be changing from a long interglacial period that has lasted the past 10,000 years and shifting back towards conditions that will ultimately lead to another ice age – unless some other forces stop or slow it. But these are processes that literally move with glacial slowness, and due to greenhouse gas emissions the Earth has already warmed as much in about the past 200 years as it ordinarily might in several thousand years, Clark said.

“One of the biggest concerns right now is how the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets will respond to global warming and contribute to sea level rise,” Clark said. “This study will help us better understand that process, and improve the validity of our models.”

The research was done in collaboration with scientists from the Geological Survey of Canada, University of Wisconsin, Stockholm University, Harvard University, the U.S. Geological Survey and University of Ulster. It was supported by the National Science Foundation and other agencies.

UPDATE: Science now has the paper online, which is behind a paywall. The abstract is open though and can be read below:

We used 5704 14C, 10Be, and 3He ages that span the interval from 10,000 to 50,000 years ago (10 to 50 ka) to constrain the timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) in terms of global ice-sheet and mountain-glacier extent. Growth of the ice sheets to their maximum positions occurred between 33.0 and 26.5 ka in response to climate forcing from decreases in northern summer insolation, tropical Pacific sea surface temperatures, and atmospheric CO2. Nearly all ice sheets were at their LGM positions from 26.5 ka to 19 to 20 ka, corresponding to minima in these forcings. The onset of Northern Hemisphere deglaciation 19 to 20 ka was induced by an increase in northern summer insolation, providing the source for an abrupt rise in sea level. The onset of deglaciation of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet occurred between 14 and 15 ka, consistent with evidence that this was the primary source for an abrupt rise in sea level ~14.5 ka.

Long Debate Ended Over Cause, Demise Of Ice Ages? Research Into Earth's Wobble

ScienceDaily (Aug. 7, 2009) — Researchers have largely put to rest a long debate on the underlying mechanism that has caused periodic ice ages on Earth for the past 2.5 million years – they are ultimately linked to slight shifts in solar radiation caused by predictable changes in Earth's rotation and axis.

In a publication to be released Friday in the journal Science, researchers from Oregon State University and other institutions conclude that the known wobbles in Earth's rotation caused global ice levels to reach their peak about 26,000 years ago, stabilize for 7,000 years and then begin melting 19,000 years ago, eventually bringing to an end the last ice age.

Bogus Emails - Dangers of OldFriends

Carrying on on from my last chat with you all....
Today I got email personally addressed to me with the name I have on the Old Friends website. This is the only place on the web that has this name so I know where the scammers got this from. Here is the email. Sounds good doesn't it - solid English sounding law firm. The only real clue to this being a scam are the words "my country,(Togo)" and the fact that the telephone area code is for Togo. Also there is the slight problem of a Barrister being a solicitor all in the same sentence, which does not happen in the British legal system. How long do you think my money would stay in my bank account once they got the account details?
Here's the email so you can be warned:
.

Dear xxxxx,,
I am Barrister Noam Copland,a solicitor at law.I am the personal attorney to ENGR.J.P.XXXX,a national of your country, who is a Contractor and have spent most of his life in my country (Togo) Here in after shall be referred to as my client. On the 30TH of April 2000, my client, his wife and their only son were involved in a car accident along bagida express road. All occupants of the vehicle unfortunately lost their lives. Since then I have made several enquiries to your embassy to locate any of my clients extended relatives, this has also proved unsuccessful. After these several unsuccessful attempts, I decided to track his last name over the Internet, to locate any Member of his family hence I contacted you.
I have contacted you to assist in repatriating the assets and Capital valued at US$9.6million left behind by my client before they get confiscated or declared unserviceable by the management of the Finance/security company, where these huge deposits were lodged declared as Family treasures of Gold Jewelry and personal precious effects. The said finance/security company, has issued me a notice to provide the next of Kin or have the Consignment confiscated within the next twenty Official working days. Since I have been unsuccessful in locating the relatives for over 4 years now, I seek the consent to present you as the Next of kin to the deceased since you have the same last names, so that this Consignment could be released to you as wished. Therefore, on receipt of your positive response, we shall then discuss the sharing ratio and modalities for transfer. I have all necessary information and legal documents needed to back you up for claim. All I require from you is your honest co-operation to enable us see this transaction through.I guarantee that this will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the law.

The Perils of Facebook

Ah! The trickiness of friendships!
Recently I have been asked by several people to become friends on Facebook. It is always nice to be asked, but what if you don't really want to get that connected? Does the friend you don't sign up to feel slighted? Does it damage a perfectly good relationship? Do you just ignore it and pretend you've never had the invite? What's the polite protocol here?
.
And what if, when going through the process of seeing which of your contacts are already on facebook, you find some who have not invited you to join their facebook contacts - in fact, not even mentioned that they have extensive networks on Facebook and you are not included. What is one meant to feel towards the person who did not include you? Was it oversight, intentional or did they just think you wouldn't be interested so they wouldn't offend you by asking?
.
And what if you have a fundamental objection to publishing your real name on the internet? Do your friends then all think you are slightly batty and almost a certainly a Luddite in this modern age? "What's the harm?", they cry. Millions of people do it.
.
I may be stupid, but I don't want my identity, photo and life broadcast to the millions. I object to websites collecting my birthday and sex to link with my real name. Sure they give convincing reasons for wanting this data.
.
Well, I'm not millions of people and I won't do it! Sure, I'll sign up with a pseudonym, a birthday and a sex, but it is doubtful whether the insisted upon information is true.
I'm going to be in deep doodoos if I ever lose my little red book!
.
The whole thing is frought with peril.
.
Folks, your identity is the most precious thing you have.
Think carefully about what you make public to all the world.
Not everyone is as nice, honest and wholesome as you are.

GLOBAL DIMMING and Other Prospective Disasters!

Which disaster do you reckon will get us first?
Just when we had come to grips with global warming, (a theory I have never subscribed to), the powers that be decided this was not the right phrase to describe the problem. Hence we got Climate Change. This is possibly a bit of a worry, together with the worldwide financial disaster, the oil supplies dwindling before an alternative is found, and now, something new to put the wind up us - Global Dimming! In the 3 days after 9-11 there were no aircraft in the USA skies. The temperature rose over 1 degree. The theory is that without all the haze due to vapor trails and other particulates in the air, the earth's temperature is rising at an even faster rate than under the Global Warming theory. So we are going to get a rise of 10 degrees in a century instead of the 5 we were going to get with good old global warming. I am assuming this is in Celcius since it was a British documentary that enlightened me about this.
.
Here's the link to the documentary. It's worth a look.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2058273530743771382
.
Of course, there are varying views on this as well as on Climate change in general.
I know you're smart enough to find them on the web (utube has lots from all points of view) and eveluate them appropriately.
.
Try this one which suggests we will get cooler instead of hotter:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgaeyMa3jyU

A few points:
1. This is very politcal and who trusts politicians in the main?
.
2. 'It's your money they're after" principle probably applies. Remember that Kyoto, Carbon Credits, emissions taxes and a whole lot of other taxes thought up by governments. The objective of is to relieve you of your cash to line some-one else's pockets . It's probably just like most things these days.... just follow the money.
.
3. There's a hellova lot of people dependent on there being a climate problem for their income.
Earth's climate has always changed over the centuries without mans' assistance. Who knows if this is just one of those natural things. Mankind may well be responsible for the major speedup of climate events, but then again, some of it might have happened anyway.
.
Most importantly, remember this:

Free Samples - Sanitarium Double (Sugar) Crunch

Some time ago, when I was a kid, Sanitarium billed itself as a maker of nutritious breakfast cereals, and still in fact does make Weetbix. Nothing wrong with good old Weetbix!
Yesterday there was a sample of it's latest breakfast product - Double Crunch.
To be fair, it's not billed as healthy or nutritious, though the label is predominantly green and has words like 'Crispy Golden Cornflakes', 'Crunchy Oat Clusters' and 'Apple and Cinnamon'.
Sounds good and healthy doesn't it!
But then there's the data on the back..... in a 40 gram packet, you get 10 grams of sugar. That's a quarter of the contents! Sugar!
Fat is almost reasonable at 2.2g but 0.5 of that is saturated.
Then there's the salt at 162mg.
Sure it has some vitamins and minerals but don't fall for it...........
.
ONE QUARTER OF THIS PRODUCT IS SUGAR!!!

Poetry for the People - Edgar A. Guest

a~ada~a
Happy 2009 everybody!
.
a&Y&a
.
I was sorting some old papers today and came across a poem by Edgar Guest. I thought it was worth sharing with you. I had to look up what pelf means as it is not an common usage today.
pelf n. Wealth or riches, especially when dishonestly acquired.
.
PEOPLE LIKED HIM
a
People liked him, not because
He was rich or known to fame;
He had never won applause
As a star in any game.
His was not a brilliant style,
His was not a forceful way,
But he had a gentle smile
And a kindly word to say.
a
Never arrogant or proud,
On he went with manner mild;
Never quarrelsome or loud,
Just as simple as a child;
Honest, patient, brave and true:
Thus he lived from day to day,
Doing what he found to do
In a cheerful sort of way.
a
Wasn't one to boast of gold
Or belittle it with sneers,
Kept his friends throughout the years,
Sort of man you like to meet
Any time or any place,
There was always something sweet
And refreshing in his face.
a
Sort of man you'd like to be:
Balanced well and truly square;
Patient in adversity,
Generous when his skies were fair.
Never lied to friend or foe,
Never rash in word or deed,
Quick to come and slow to go
In a neighbor's time of need.
a
Never rose to wealth or fame,
Simply lived, and simply died,
But the passing of his name
Left a sorrow, far and wide.
Not for glory he'd attained,
Nor for what he had of pelf,
Were the friends that he had gained,
But for what he was himself.

The Good News of the Week

Thank the Lord!
I won't have to see that Palin woman winking and making that ugly face when she thinks she's been particularly witty.
Thank you Americans!
I sure hope Barack Obama can achieve the changes America needs to get back on track.
At least one thing's for sure. He's the best hope USA has had this century of reversing the hatred so many people feel towards it.
Nothing like a couple of never-ending wars, interminable covert interference with other country's affairs and a swathe of rude American tourists to make Americans totally unpopular.
But now we have Barack Obama.
I'll be able to admit to being an American citizen again!
Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!
America the Beautiful.....
Land of the Brave.....
Home of the Free.....
Greatest country on earth!
I love it!

New Zealand Elections

Now let me see, have I got it right?
We have a worldwide financial crisis.  This was to a great extent caused by money traders and their ilk.
What was John Key before he became a politition?.... Did I hear you right? He was an money trader you say? . And when times got tough he fired a whole lot of his staff?
And now New Zealanders have elected him as Prime Minister - in charge of the country's finances?
His coalition partner is a party on the far right led by 2 men whom 97% of New Zealanders revile?
And you say New Zealanders aren't descendants from the backwoods of Virginia?  No inbreeding at all?
Well I'll be damned!!!!

Philips Call Centre Update

The following is the email replyI received from Philips New Zealand. Full marks to them for striving to improve their company performance and customer relations.

Thank you very much for your recent feedback.

On behalf of Philips, apologies for the experience you had to endure. Obviously in moving to a new call centre, there will be some initial teething troubles. It goes without saying that what you experienced is less than optimal.

For us to make improvements to this service the sort of feedback you provided is essential.

Thanks

Philips Philipino Call Centre

Shame on you, Philips.
Yes Folks, Philips New Zealand is the latest to have an offshore callcentre.  It's diabolical! After spelling my name at snail-pace to a pleasant-enough young man who had mangled it 5 times, we got to the point.  All I wanted to do was to centre the TV picture on the 14:9 and 16:9 ratio settings. I was sure nothing much was wrong with the TV and it was very possible I'd just changed a setting and couldn't figure out how to reset it.  He needed the model number and when I bought it.
The polite but totally incompetent man with the pseudo American accent reckoned you had to do it through the picture settings or the automatic setup, neither of which give you any options to adjust the placing of the picture on the screen. We fiddled futily with various menus for a while. I'm sure the instructions would have been easy to follow if you were another Philipino speaking English, but kiwi English it wasn't. Then he went to get a manual.  He still didn't know how to fix it.  In the end, he insisted that the widescreen setting should cover the whole screen and something was wrong with the LCD and I would have to get a serviceperson. I pointed out that widescreen had never covered the whole screen and if it did it would distort the picture.  He said, "the LCD is broken".  I said that I wasn't actually calling about the widescreen setting.
"LCD is broken, you must take it to the service person." says he.  I pointed out that I could not even lift said tv and would not be taking it anywhere. "Make the service person come to you," says he. I'm not sure that he ever did grasp what the problem was, and he certainly never came near fixing it.
He gave me a phone number for Philips service in Auckland. He had no idea where the phone numbers where in Auckland but could offer 4 different numbers. He didn't have any suburbs, only North, South etc.  Real helpful. So I had him read the numbers out and worked out the likely area for myself.  I phoned the number we settled on....  it was a fax number,  not a phone number.
So after half an hour or so of wasting my time, he couldn't even get that right, though I think he did finally get my name spelt right.
"Bugger!" said I to myself and  called the 0800 number again.  Now here's the trick - if you press option 1 you get the foreign hoards, but press option 2 and you get a good Kiwi bloke.
I explained what I needed to the said good Kiwi bloke and he said "Oh that's easy to fix - you just use the arrow points on the big circle on the remote!"  This took all of 2 minutes.
No broken LCD
No endless namespelling
No finding model number or date of purchase
No going and consulting the manual
No instructions to fiddle with the tv settings in totally incomprehensible English
It was wonderful!
So the moral of this story is, dear folk,  If you ever have to phone Philips  about your malfunctioning appliance, go straight to option 2 no matter what the automated voice instructs you to do.

I see we will not have this problem for TVs much longer - this is from Consumer site.....

Farewell to Philips TVs

2-Oct-2008

Philips has announced it is quitting the TV market here as part of a reorganisation of its business. It will cease importing them by the end of the year.

We're sorry to see the brand disappear from TVs, as we've tested some very good Philips sets since our first test of colour sets in 1974.

My first tv was a Philips - a real dog of a thing which I made the retailer take back and replace.  The 2nd one lasted quite well and this one is very good.  I stared at LCD's in stores for hours before selecting this one and so far I am more than happy with it.  I hope it isn't going to prove to be a nightmare to get fixed if it does go phut.
